Weekend Predictions Can D Stop a Threepeat? Or Will Reunion Rule?

On April 5th, 2012, a trio of movies were released hoping to win at the box office. Some thought American Reunion would win because it was the newest installment in a very popular series. Others thought Titanic 3D would win because it was a 3D re-released of the 2nd biggest hit of all time. Still others thought The Hunger Games would win for the 3rd week in a row. It was by far the biggest hit this year and topped the charts on Wednesday, despite the release of Titanic. All three movies have a chance to make over $30 million over the next two days. Last year, there were no hits making more than $30 million, and only one movie, Hop, made more then $20 million. This shows that 2012 should win easily.

Weekend Predictions Will Hunger Remain the Fairest or Feel the Wrath of the Fanboy Effect?

March 30, 2012. There are two saturation level release coming out this week, “Wrath of the Titans” and “Mirror Mirror”. Even so, there’s an almost 100% chance that “The Hunger Games” will repeat at the top of the charts. “Wrath of the Titan”s would have to nearly double it’s average prediction and / or “The Hunger Games” would have to collapse by an almost record amount for there to not be a new number one. Additionally, unless there is some catastrophic event that keeps everyone away from theaters nationwide, we should see massive growth from 2011. In fact, even if “The Hunger Games” doesn’t come close to repeating, we could still see some growth from last year. Most analysts expect “The Hunger Games” to be stronger than the 3 new releases from last year, which means that “John Carter” should place 6th with $2 million over this weekend, but that wouldn’ even be enough for a Top 10 finish last year. Weekend Predictions Will Moviegoers Jump at a Quality Release?

March 15, 2012. So far 2012 has brought hits after hits, but what has been missing in the box office success has been the lack of quality releases. Last week, there weren’t any films in the top ten to receive overall positive reviews. (Though Doctor Seuss’ The LORAX is very close to that mark.) Unfortunately, that will continue this weekend as 21 Jump Streeet is earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. It is also the only wide release of this week, compared to three last year. However, the best of last years crop, LIMITLESS, opened with less than twenty million dollars and all but the most optimistic think 21 Jump Street will surpass that with ease. If the holds can hold, we could see yet again a win at the box office!

Weekend Predictions Can D Stop a Threepeat? Or Will Reunion Rule?

April 5, 2012.. Three movies are looking to win at the box office this weekend. Some think “American Reunion” will win. It is an installment in a very popular movie franchise, one that hasn’t had a theatrical release in nearly 9 years. Some think “Titanic 3D” will lead the way. That is a 3D rerelease of the second biggest hit of all time. Others think “The Hunger Games” will win for the third week in a row. It has already won the biggest hit of the summer. Despite the debut of “Titanic,” it should easily win again. All three films have a chance to make over $30 million over the next four days. Last year, no film made more than $30m and only one, “Hop”, made more than $20m. This means 2012 should easily win with ease.

Weekend Predictions Will Hunger Remain the Fairest or Feel the Wrath of the Fanboy Effect?

There are two saturation level releases this week, Wrath of The Titans and Mirror Mirror. There’s also a 99% chance that The Hunger Games will continue to hold onto the #1 spot. If Wrath of the Titans doubles its average prediction, then The Hunger Games would need to collapse by a near-record amount for there to be another #1 this weekend. However, if The Hunger Games holds steady at an average prediction of $30 million, then Wrath of the Titans would need to almost triple its average prediction to overtake it. Additionally, since there are only three new releases this year compared to four last year, there could be some slight growth from last year. More importantly, though, is the lack of depth this year. Last year had five films that opened above $100 million, while this year has just two. That means that there won’t be any major surprises this weekend, which isn’t necessarily bad news, but it does mean that there won’t be much room for growth.John Carter should place sixth with around $2 million over the next few days, but that wouldn’t be enough for a top 10 finish last year. Weekend Predictions Will Moviegoers Jump at a Quality Release?

It’s hard to say whether or not March 15th, 2012 was a turning point for the movie industry. But it certainly seems like it was for me. I remember watching the first trailer for 21 Jump Street and thinking “this looks really funny.” And then I watched the movie and thought “this is actually really funny.” And then when I saw the sequel trailer, I thought “I’m going to go see this movie right now!” And then I went to see it and thought “this is really funny.” And then my wife said “you should write about movies,” and I did.
