Our car’s safety system relies on our tail lights to alert us when others are driving in the dark. You and other drivers sharing your road can be affected if the tail light is damaged or cracked.
Cost of Tail Light Replacement
It will cost about $20 to replace a tail light bulb that has gone out. The cost of replacing the entire assembly can vary. For each tail light assembly, you can expect to pay $200-$2000 at a dealer or auto body shop. You will be paying even more if you own a luxury vehicle. You can save $30-$250 if you do it yourself.
If the bulb does not turn on after you have replaced it, there may be a problem with the assembly.
A Bad Fuse
When an electrical element stops working, the circuit box should be your first stop. A fuse is a small piece of metal within a plastic housing. It will burst if the current is too strong. It is a good thing if it breaks as it protects other parts of your electrical system. A circuit box can be located in many different places.
Bad tail light fuse
Each fuse connects to an electrical component. When you remove the cover to access the fuse, you will see where it goes and what it does. This information can also be found in the owner’s manual. Online, you can search for a specific year, make, and design or look up a particular diagram.
Faulty Tail Light Bulbs
You will need to check the bulbs for functionality if the fuses work. Most likely, you will need to remove the taillight cover. Some cars, however, have an easy way to reach the panel. To access the panel, you can simply twist the bulb from its lens.
Sometimes, your car’s sockets may stop working. A bulb that is inserted into damaged sockets will not turn on. A socket may fail if it is wet. If the wiring is incorrect, a socket may also stop functioning.
Failure of the Control Switch
The switch that controls the taillights is not working properly could also cause them to stop functioning. You will need to inspect the control switch if the wires appear unaffected.
The same switch can be used to turn on the headlights, tail lights, and parking lights. To check if the switch is functioning, you will need to remove it from the dashboard and test it with a multimeter.
